HA1-Task 1 Glossary

Pixels- Pixels are the small dots that make up digital images. Pixels may only be one colour at a time but because they are so small and so many of them they can often blend together to make different colours. Unlike film cameras a digital camera has a sensor that converts the light into electrical charges. There are millions of pixels in he sensor of a digital camera.

Resolution- Resolution is the sharpness and clarity of an image useally in monitors in printers or screen monitors. The resoultion of the image is dependent on the amount of pixels an image with lots of pixels will be clearer than one with fewer pixels. For graphics monitors, the screen resolution signifies the number of dots (pixels) on the entire screen. For example, a 640-by-480 pixel screen is capable of displaying 640 distinct dots on each of 480 lines, or about 300,000 pixels. This translates into different dpi measurements depending on the size of the screen. For example, a 15-inch VGA monitor (640x480) displays about 50 dots per inch.

Screen Ratios- Screen ratio is the relationship between the width and height in an image and is commonly given as two numbers such a 4:3.

Frame Rate- Frame rate is the rate of which how many frames are shown useally referd to as (FPS) frames per second. When recording frame rate tells you how many frames per second are being captures by the camera. Most cameras film at around 25fps although it is possible to get the fps much higher, it is possible to film at 1000fps which is usefull for movies when creating a slow motion effect. When editing a video if you change the FPS from 12 to 25 the frames will be repeated to keep the clip the same lenght of time.

Video Formats- The most common video formats are DV,HDV and AVCHD. DV and HDV can be tape based formats and easily transperd to a computer. AVCHD is a file based formats and are stored as files and can be transferd by simply using a usb or a card reader. Some file based formats will need converting after they have been transferd to be compatible with editing software or to be placed on youtube or other video sites.

Compression- Compression is when you reduce the size of data in a file in order to save space or upload time of a video. Graphic images often are compressed because they can become very large files, Although when compressing a file some information can be permentaly lost.
